Out of the classroom:
If I'm not teaching, writing, or researching, I try to experience life outside of the classroom. I live in the Midwest with my family and one dippy cat. I enjoy hiking and gardening. I also participate in living history events. Re searching and handsewing historically accurate clothing is a particular passion of mine, as is "experimental archaeology," or answering historical questions via trial and error. Preserving historical lifeways is only half of the living history equation; I also enjoy educating those who attend our events and helping them to experience more of the texture and personality of the past than textbooks have given them.

The interplay of living history and public history fascinates me; it's an alternative yet fruitful way to reach many. I explore the academic and the sartorial sides of living history on my blog, Hyaline Prosaic.
